Ohio Bill to Increase Child Support Fails to Pass—Thanks to All Who Participated in Our Campaign
 SB 292, the bill to increase Ohio child support obligations by an average of 27%, has failed to pass. Thanks to all of you who participated in our Campaign to Defeat Ohio Bill to Raise Child Support Levels in Worst Economy Since the Great Depression.
In working against SB 292, Fathers and Families of Ohio conferred with legislators and interested stakeholders, garnered extensive media coverage, and organized opposition.
However, the fight isn’t over. We expect the bill to be re-introduced into the legislature in January, and we will be battling it again. Our crucial work costs money—please help support our successes by giving at www.fathersandfamilies.org/give.
Fathers and Families of Ohio worked to help defeat child support bill SB 292 because:
- SB 292 raises child support levels in the face of the worst economy since the Great Depression
- The increases are large–an Ohio noncustodial parent earning $50,000 a year and paying child support for two kids would see their CS raised 31%
- SB 292 changes Ohio law so that future child support guidelines would not be determined by elected, accountable legislators, but instead by bureaucrats in the same agency whose job is to maximize child support collections in Ohio
- SB 292 treats non-residential parents as decidedly second-class parents. The guidelines take into account the money primary residential parents spend on their kids, yet non-residential parents’ similar expenses are scarcely considered
- SB 292 treats all child support obligors who have their children less than 40% of the time the same, whether they spend 145 days a year with their kids or only an hour
