When this occurs, Fathers and Families is on the side of the mother whose loving bonds with her children are being endangered. In Re the Marriage of Brandt, decided this week by the Colorado Supreme Court, is such a case. Fathers and Families has been assisting Captain Christine Brandt of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps to regain custody of her 12-year-old son.

In the face of a family court system that is stacked against him, he fights a long, hard battle to remain a meaningful part of the lives of the children who love and need him. The press rarely, if ever, talks about the Hero Father. They’d rather vilify “deadbeat dads,” real or imagined.

But even the best among us could learn much from a Hero Father of a different era—a former slave named Spottswood Rice.

Maile was kept from Solomon by a combination of a restraining order based on discredited domestic violence charges and the Washington Department of Social and Health Services, who seized Maile away from her unfit mother six weeks ago and put her in foster care.

MI Rep. Heise Responds to Fathers and Families over CAPA

Fathers and Families has joined with the ACLU of Michigan in opposing the Michigan’s Coercive Abortion Prevention Act (CAPA). Fathers and Families does not take a position on abortion, but we do oppose CAPA because it criminalizes men’s personal relationship choices.
